PUERTO PRINCESA ITINERARY + BUDGET TRAVEL GUIDE

Detailed Puerto Princesa Travel Guide with sample Puerto Princesa Itinerary and Budget, Things to Do, Where to Stay, travel tips, and more.

Puerto Princesa City is a modest metropolis where broad promenade and slick seafront coexists with tree-lined avenues, hilltops, green parks, sandy white beaches, and cultural communities. Blissfully sheltered by jungle-clad mountains plummeting into the swirling cerulean waters of Honda Bay and Sabang, Puerto Princesa offers a relaxing blend of scenic viewpoints, wildlife conservation sites, historical landmarks and local craftmanship. Home to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River – one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, this hurried city blends natural attractions with a friendly, small-town vibe. A few days stay in Puerto Princesa is all it takes to set your heart racing.

Here’s my detailed Puerto Princesa Travel Guide with sample Puerto Princesa Itinerary and Expenses to help you plan your trip.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT PUERTO PRINCESA

Like the rest of the Philippines, Puerto Princesa enjoys a wet and dry season.  The best time to visit Puerto Princesa is during the dry season – January to early June.

Heavy rains and typhoons are expected around July to November. But the nice thing about off-peak season is, hotels and flights are discounted as much as 50% off, though I highly suggest you check the weather updates before proceeding.

WHERE TO STAY IN PUERTO PRINCESA

Puerto Princesa City maybe dubbed as a “City in the Forest”, though upon arrival, it’s honestly hard to see why it’s dubbed as one. Concrete buildings speckled everywhere and annoying traffic jams. Despite that, the city center remains as one of the recommended areas to stay when you’re in Puerto Princesa.

HONDA BAY ISLAND HOPPING

Tan-hungry bodies come for Palawan’s sun, sea and sand.  And its capital – Puerto Princesa City, though often overshadowed by the more scenic islands and beaches of El Nido and the tranquil tropical cliché islands off the coast of Port Barton, has its own dramatic  stretch of coastline and island to flaunt like Honda Bay. Nestled just a short drive away from Puerto Princesa’s city center, Honda Bay is where powdered-sugary soft sands fringed by coconut palms and perfect waves peel off in several directions in the shoreline.

The main islands visited for Honda Bay island hopping are:

  • Luli Island – a great swimming spot, famous for its sandbar that appears/disappears with the tide.
  • Cowrie Island – larger island with beachside areas perfect for lunch, water activities or just unwinding on its sandy shore.
  • Starfish Island – shallow snorkeling and starfish spotting.

Tour Options and Costs:

PUERTO PRINCESA UNDERGROUND RIVER

The view of the jungled-clad limestone hills is the star of show upon arrival at the Puerto Princesa Underground River. This UNESCO World Heritage Site was designated as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. The emerald green Puerto Princesa Underground River flows through a neck-swiveling limestone karst cave system and empties directly into the sea, which is a rare geological formation. The entire river system stretches around 8.2 km, and about half of it can be explored by boat. Inside the cave, you’ll encounter extraordinary stalactites, stalagmite, rock formations, and large chambers where bats and swiftlets reside.

Visitors typically join a guided boat tour through the Puerto Princesa Underground River from Sabang Wharf.  Take note that permits are required and there are daily limits on visitors to help protect the environment. Best to secure a permit at least 1-2 days before your planned tour.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to stress about the permits, transportation, and lunch, you can join the group tours organized by local tour operators. You can book ahead through the links below for a hassle-free trip.

I’ll write a separate detailed blog on DIY Trip to Puerto Princesa Underground River , but for your quick reference, here’s how much it’ll cost you if you do a DIY trip, take note that transfer/transport to and from Sabang Port and lunch aren’t included. There are eateries/carinderia at Sabang Port, bring cash.  There’s also a Euronet ATM here, but I would still suggest you withdraw cash in Puerto Princesa City.

Puerto Princesa Underground River Open Hours: Daily 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Important: Drones not allowed in the national park.

MANGROVE PADDLEBOAT TOUR + TAMILOK

Before or after your Puerto Princesa Underground River Tour, there’s another interesting activity nearby. Just walking distance from Sabang Port is a community-managed paddle boat tour experience through the mangrove forests in Brgy. Sabang, still part of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park area.  By booking the Sabang Mangrove Forest tour, you are helping and supporting the community-based sustainable tourism in Cabayugan, which helps manage and preserve the local mangrove area.

You can hire a paddle boat stirred by a local boatman and slowly drift along the calm waterways fringed by mangroves where you’ll spot wildlife living in the area such as monkeys, birds, and monitor lizards. You can learn more about the ecology of the mangrove forest and their conservation efforts discussed by the local guide. The tour take around 30- minutes.  If you’re lucky enough, the locals might offer to search for the popular local delicacy tamilok (shipworm) for you, you can buy them or give them a tip. Though they look like worms, they’re actually just shell-less saltwater clams that bores holes into woods and mangrove trees.

You can do a DIY Mangrove Paddle Tour (see the link of my DIY Sabang Mangrove Tour below) or book the tour along with the Puerto Princesa Underground River through the links below.

 UGONG ROCK ADVENTURES

You may be tempted to just relax on the beach, but did you know there are adventure activities in Puerto Princesa that are worth experiencing? Nearby Sabang area is Ugong Rock, a 75-foot tall limestone karst formation where visitors can explore caves (spelunking) and enjoy zipline rides with views of the dense forest hugging the limestone hills and the green rice fields below. The name “ugong” comes from the gong-like echoing sounds the rocks make inside the passages.

IWAHIG FIREFLY WATCHING TOUR

I’ve yet to try this but I’ll include this on the Things to Do in Puerto Princesa list for you as I have heard some of my traveler friends brag about how good this tour is. The Iwahig Firefly Watching Tour in Puerto Princesa is a relaxing evening activity that takes tourists on a guided boat cruise through mangrove-lined river such as the Iwahig River.  It’s a roughly 30-45 minute cruise where guests can observe colonies of synchronized fireflies glowing among the trees while learning about the mangrove conservation and the local ecosystem. The tour typically includes hotel transfers, boat ride,  and licensed guide.

WHERE TO EAT IN PUERTO PRINCESA

There’s a couple of good place to dine in Puerto Princesa. But I have only tried a few, mostly the popular ones because I’m usually just passing through. Having said that, here are some of the top-rated restaurants that I have tried and the suggested budget.

KINABUCHS GRILL AND BAR

This place is pretty popular to tourists and more like an institution already in Puerto Princesa. As its name suggest, it’s a grill and bar serving Filipino cuisine seafood, Asian dishes, and a full bar. We tried a couple of food here and I understood why it’s pretty popular, because the food here are good. But be warned that it gets pretty full at night, so come here early to secure a seat, they open here around 4:00 PM.

Famous: Local grilled specialties, including crocodile meat dishes, sizzling sisig, seafood, crispy pata and the Palawan delicacy – tamilok.

Atmosphere: Casual, open-air space, ideal for dinner, drinks, and social gatherings

Price Range: ₱400 ($7) to ₱1,000 ($17)

  • Kinabuchs Grill and Bar
  • Address: 369 Rizal Avenue, Puerto Princesa City
  • GPS:9°44’24.0″N 118°44’45.6″E
  • Open Hours: Tuesday to Sunday (Closed on Monday) 4:00 PM – 11:00 PM

KALAUI SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

Another pretty popular restaurant in Puerto Princesa best known for its fresh seafood and local Filipino dishes.

Famous for: fresh seafood and Filipino-Asian dishes, with options like crabs, fish steak, sashimi, tempura, sinigang and vegetables dishes

Atmosphere: rustic, open-air dining in a traditional Filipino wooden house

Price Range: ₱500 ($9) to ₱1,000 ($17)

  • Kalaui Seafood Restaurant
  • Address: 369 Rizal Avenue, Puerto Princesa City
  • GPS:9°44’27.8″N 118°44’53.1″E
  • Open Hours: Daily – Lunch 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Dinner 6:00 PM – 10:30 PM

BONA’S CHAO LONG HAUS

A pretty popular Vietnamese-inspired noodle restaurant in Puerto Princesa, best known for  its affordable chao long, a rich beef noodle soup with Filipino-Vietnamese flavor with generous portions of beef stew. I did like their chao long when I first tried it a decade ago, but when we returned during our last trip, I honestly don’t find the broth as rich as before, it’s a little too thin for my taste.

Famous for: beef chao long

Atmosphere: laidback and informal

Price Range: ₱100 ($1.72) to ₱200 ($3.45)

VIET VILLE

Located in a former Vietnamese village settlement with historical roots from Vietnamese refugees who once lived here. The Viet Ville Restaurant serves authentic Vietnamese cuisines such as pho, chao long, spring rolls and banh mi. You can tour around the village where old and abandoned houses of the refugees still stand to date but most are overgrown with plants. There’s also a Vietnamese Buddhist Temple (Chua Van Phap Buddhist Temple) tucked here and a Catholic chapel. There’s no entrance fee, but you can get a guide to tour you around and explain the history and culture shared here.

Famous for: pho, chao long and banh mi

Atmosphere: casual welcoming vibe, with simple Vietnamese décor, lush plants and comfortable seating, perfect for lingering over a meal

Price Range: ₱150 ($2.58) to ₱400 ($7) for solo dishes, ₱1,499 ($26) to ₱2,499 ($43) for group meal

PUERTO PRINCESA ITINERARY

Whether you are craving island hopping, snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, exploring underground caves, or simply relaxing on white sand beaches, Puerto Princesa offers the perfect mix of adventure and serenity.

Here’s a sample Puerto Princesa 3-4 day itinerary with budget/expenses. For your convenience, I didn’t write this as DIY travel but as a tourist availing the cheap tour packages in Puerto Princesa. I will write a separate blog on these places and will probably do a DIY Travel Guide there for your reference. But having been to Puerto Princesa a few times already, I highly recommend booking a tour package (joining group tours) especially if you are traveling alone or just a couple or small group, it’s more convenient because there’s no need to think about securing a permit for some attractions, hotel transfers to the tourist spots, and where to have lunch during the tour.

Take note that airfare, hotel, drinks, souvenirs, and other personal expenses aren’t included in the sample budget. This budget is good for a solo traveler.
