STAR VOYAGER: STAR CRUISES (HONG KONG GUIDE AND REVIEW)

Anchors up, adventure on! Chase new horizons one wave at a time! I recently embarked on a 6 Day 5 Night cruise through Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan via Star Voyager by Star Cruises. Cruising is one my favorite styles of traveling because it offers a unique way to explore the world, combining the luxury of a floating resort with the excitement of discovering different destinations in a single trip.

ABOUT STAR CRUISES

Star Cruises has 3 ships: Genting Dream, Star Navigator, and Star Voyager. So, if you’re going to book a cruise with Star Cruises, you can pick a ship and start from there – your port of embarkation, where you want to go, how long you want to go on a cruise and the type of cabin that you want to experience.

ABOUT STAR VOYAGER

For our 6 Day 5 Night cruise through Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan we sailed via Star Voyager operated under the Star Cruises brand. It’s a refurbished ship with about $50 million of upgrades to amenities, activities, and modern finishes for a refreshed cruising experience. The ship can accommodate up to 1,940 guests. It is deployed in Southeast Asia and East Asia, with home ports in places like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand depending on season.

STAR VOYAGER PRE-TRIP PREPARATION

TRAVEL ESSENTIALS

Take note that Wi-Fi is not included in your Star Voyager cruise package. You have to pay that separately if you decide to avail of the ship’s Wi-Fi onboard. It’s a tad expensive, but since they have their own satellite, the connection is pretty reliable. It’s perfect for those who have online work. I availed of the Wi-Fi onboard and it was pretty reliable. For the Premium Wi-Fi (1 device), it’s HKD 500 (roughly 3,748) for 5 days. If you want to use it for your laptop or other device, you just need to log it off and then log-in using the other device that you want to use.

Otherwise, you can rent a pocket Wi-Fi or buy an E-sim, but since you’ll be sailing most of the time, connection may not be reliable especially if you’re in the middle of the vast ocean.

POCKET WIFI (ASIA): RENT HERE

You can print it or save it in your phone for Immigration Purposes. Bring a ballpen for the forms you need to fill out for Immigration and Security.

Travel insurance is not included in your cruise package. Book this separately.

 Travel Insurance: BOOK HERE

STAR CRUISES ONLINE CHECK-IN

Once you’ve booked the Star Voyager cruise and received your cruise ticket. Check-in online HERE for the mandatory online check-in to avoid delays at the port. Provide necessary information like passport details, emergency contact person and number, etc. The online check-in closes 48 hours prior to your scheduled sailing. If you miss this process, you can still check-in manually at the port terminal on your sail date, but you have to queue.

STAR VOYAGER PACKING TIPS

Pack like you would for a resort vacation. Dress comfortably, but also consider the season/climate of your destination as well as dress code for religious tourist attractions such as temples, mosques, etc.

Here’s my suggested clothes/gears to pack:

Pack for casual days at sea.

Pack for formal nights. Some cruises have dress codes for certain dinners or events (like tuxedos or dresses).

Don’t forget to pack comfortable shoes or sandals  for shore excursions and light layers. Rubber shoes or closed-toe-shoes and t-shirt with sleeves for adventure activities is required, such as the walk the plank, zipline, and wall climbing. To use the gym, gym attire is also preferred, e.g rubber shoes, shorts, jogging pants, leggings, sweat-wicking tops/dri fit.

Pack a swimwear and sunscreen if you plan to use the pool and waterslide.

Bring a universal travel adapter.

Bring your own toiletries if you’re not comfortable using the toiletries that’s provided onboard.

Bring your medicine, just enough for your stay onboard,  best to have them in their original packaging in case you get questioned by security during the bag x-ray.

PROHIBITED ITEMS ONBOARD STAR CRUISES

  • Electrical items and heating devices such as iron, cooking appliances, coffee maker, extension cords
  • Flammable, explosive materials/Pressurized Vessels/Candles & Incense
  • Raw food including pastries, eggs, dairy, meats, selected fruits and others
  • Alcohol
  • E-Cigarettes and vape
  • Sharp object including but not limited to knives, throwing stars and open razors
  • Weapons including replicas, imitations and components of firearms, crossbows, blunt weapons and stun devices
  • Others such as Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), laser pointers, remotely controlled devices, self-balancing hover boards/scooters and any other items that might endanger people onboard
  • Illegal drugs or disabling chemicals (e.g., gas guns, tear gas sprays, mace, phosphorus, acid etc.)

STAR VOYAGER SHIP TIME AND CURRENCY

Time: Star Voyager sailing from Hong Kong follows Hong Kong time which is the same as Philippine and Taiwan Time. So all schedules on shows, dining, activities onboard and shore excursions follows Hong Kong Time. This can be confusing because your phone will automatically change the time once it reaches another country with different time like Japan. You can turn off the option to set the time automatically on your phone or just Google “time in Hong Kong now” to avoid confusion.

Currency: For this cruise, the ship uses Hong Kong Dollars as currency since it’s sailing from Hong Kong. There’s no ATM inside the ship, but there’s money exchange at the Reception located on deck 5, Midship. For our Japan trip, one of us withdraw money from the ATM at the port during our shore excursion and we just paid her. We did this to save on ATM fees, since we only need a few JPY (Japanese Yen) to buy snacks and souvenir for our Naha Tour. For Taipei, our colleague still has extra NTD (New Taiwan Dollars) so we just borrowed NTD and paid him with PHP.

WHERE TO STAY IN HONG KONG

Our port of embarkation for this Star Voyager Cruise to Japan and Taiwan is Hong Kong. I highly suggest flying in a day or 2 before your schedule sailing in case something unexpected happens like a delayed flight or cancelled flight. Best to book a hotel near the port terminal.

For our 5Day 4 Nights Hong Kong – Japan – Taiwan cruise onboard the Star Voyager, the hub is at Ocean Terminal Extension Building at Harbour City in Canton Road. It is near Tsim Sha Tsui District at the tip of the southern Kowloon Peninsula. As such, I suggest booking a hotel in this area for easy access to Ocean Terminal. You can even tour around Harbour City and Tsim Sha Tsui like we did before boarding the ship. Just make sure you don’t get late in boarding your ship.

HONG KONG HOTELS

Here are some budget ti mid-range hotels in Tsim Sha Tsui District, Kowloon City and Cuaseway Bay. I only included one from Chung King Mansion because I heard horrible reviews from friends. But it’s really the cheapest place in Tsim Sha Tsui area.

I haven’t tried staying in these hotels. I also haven’t tried staying at Chung King Mansion. Whenever I’m in Hong Kong, I stay at the hotels inside Disneyland. It’s a tad expensive, but it’s worth it since the rooms are clean, spacious, and comfortabl and walking distance to Disneyland.

STAR CRUISES: STAR VOYAGER CRUISE GUIDE

 1. ARRIVE AT THE PORT

Arrive early on embarkation day to ensure you have enough time to check-in and board the ship. Some cruise line offers expedited check-in for certain cabin types or loyalty members, so look into this if you are eligible. For this Star Voyager cruise, the port of embarkation is Ocean Terminal in Harbour City in Kowloon. It is located in  Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.

  • Ocean Terminal
  • Address: 2nd Floor, Cruise Passenger Hall, Ocean Terminal Extension Building, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong
  • GPS: 22°40’12.0″N 114°12’37.1″E
  • Nearest MRT Station: Tsim Sha Tsui Station

If you’ve already checked-in online. Surrender your check-in luggage at the bag drop counter. You need to show your Star Cruises cruise ticket (online copy or printed copy), then the staff will tag your luggage with your deck number and stateroom/cabin number. Your luggage will be sent to your stateroom directly. Make sure you don’t have any valuables, important documents, or gadgets inside the luggage because they’ll put the luggage outside your cabin door.

IMPORTANT: Don’t put your passport and the photocopy of your passport inside your luggage because you’ll need it when you claim your Sea Pass Card later and when you board the ship, you will surrender it to the staff.

My colleagues brought a small bag or backpack for their gadgets and valuables and carried it with them while they tour around Tsim Sha Tsui area before boarding the ship. Meanwhile, I brought my 7kg hand-carry luggage with me where I packed my camera and laptop and passport. So don’t be like me. LOL

2. CHECK-IN AND CLAIM YOUR SEA PASS CARD

If you’re ready to board the Star Voyager ship by Star Cruises, you need to check-in and claim your Sea Pass Card. If you’ve already check-in online, you can just present your passport and cruise ticket to the staff to claim your Sea Card Pass. This will serve as your access card/keycard to your stateroom/cabin and your payment card (like a credit card) for your purchases or whatever you consume inside the ship that is not included in your cruise package will be charged on your Sea Pass Card. The Sea Pass Card contains your state room number and deck number, emergency assembly station, embarkation date, and vessel name.

Your Sea Pass Card is like your life line inside the Star Voyager ship. Never misplace or lose it. In case you lost it, go immediately to Reception at Deck 5, Midship and have it cancelled and replaced as anyone who gets a hold of your card can use it.

For Balcony and Palace guests at Star Voyager, you can check-in at the ground floor of Ocean Terminal. While Oceanview and Interior Stateroom guests need to check-in on the second floor. Don’t worry, if you get lost or confused, there’s ton of cruise staff at the terminal that can direct you to the right place.

3. CLEAR IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS

After checking-in, proceed to the Hong Kong Immigration for your exit stamp. Bring a ballpen to fill out the Immigration forms, for the “Address in Hong Kong”, just write down the ship’s name – Star Voyager by Star Cruises.  Removed your mask and cap. Present your passport. Make sure you have a copy of your cruise ticket (saved on your phone or printed copy) in case the Immigration Officers asks for it. After clearing Immigration, proceed to Security for the bag x-ray.

Important: No photo or video recording at the Immigration and Security area. Stop recording.

4. BOARD THE SHIP AND SURRENDER YOUR PASSPORT

After clearing the Immigration and Security, you’re now ready to board the Star Voyager ship by Star Cruises. At this point, you need to show your Sea Card Pass to the staff, including your passport and the photocopies of your passport bio-page. You need to surrender your passport and 1 copy of passport bio-page for your Japan Visa. The other photocopy you need to keep it with you because you’ll need that for your entry to Taiwan. Once you disembark the ship for your Naha shore excursion, that 1 copy of your passport bio-page will be returned to you. Make sure it has a Japan Visa stamp on it.

5. EXPLORE THE SHIP

Once onboard, the mandatory safety drill will be played on your room’s TV, watch it so you’ll know what to do in case of emergency. Then, explore the ship and familiarize yourself with the inclusive restaurants and dining times as well the shows and activities schedules.

I was billeted on the 10th floor of Star Voyager and my cabin is located on the Aft (rear or back) section of the ship. Most of the amenities like the inclusive restaurants such as Lido is located on the Forward (front) section of the ship. So to get there it can be quite confusing because I can’t just use the Aft elevator near my cabin to get to Forward elevator. I need to find the midship elevator, and use that to get the forward section of the ship. For the midship elevator, from the Aft Elevator, I go to Deck 5 first. Then pass through the entertainment section to get to the Midship Elevator. Then I use that to go to  the Forward Section of the ship like Deck 14 where Lido is located, etc. Anyway, you’ll get the hang of it once you’ve familiarized yourself with the ship. Just ask the staff or reception in case you get lost.

 6. ENJOY THE AMENITIES

Cruises are known for their mix of relaxation and adventure. Participate in daily activities, attend shows, and explore the ship. Relax and unwind!

Here are the amenities you can enjoy in Star Voyager by Star Cruises. NOT all amenities are FREE, so always remember to ask the staff if you don’t know. But I listed below the amenities and restaurants that are included in your cruise package, hence, they are free. However take note that you can only dine free in one inclusive restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Restaurant hopping is discouraged.  For example, you already had breakfast at Lido Buffet, you cannot have breakfast again at North Star Dining on the same day. You can try another restaurant for breakfast the next day, and that’s what I did so I can experience all the inclusive restaurants.

STAR VOYAGER INCLUSIVE RESTAURANTS

Klook offers group tour packages in Naha, Japan, however, when I check the start of the tour, it usually starts at 8:00 AM, however, the schedule of cruise disembarkation is a bit late, so you might miss the tour. I suggest, if you’ll do a DIY Tour, just rent a car with driver so you can manage your time and ensure you’ll be back  on time. You can book through the link below.
