Zamboanga City – This charming city is bursting with accommodations for all types of budget, from cheap hotels to mid-range and high-end. So you, won’t have a hard time looking for a place to stay at. It is by far, one of my favorite cities in Mindanao – south of the Philippines, because staying here won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and I find it safe.
Here are some recommended areas:
- Canelar/Gov. Caminis Avenue: This area is central, close to shops, malls, restaurant, and for easy transport. A bit noisy though since it’s a bustling city center, traffic may also be a problem.
- Sta. Maria/Veterans Avenue: Quieter location and good hotel choices. Slightly farther from the port and tourist attractions but has access to main roads.
- Putik/Tumaga: Budget-friendly and local vibe. Less glamourous.
- Around Zamboanga Airport/KCC Mall area: This is a convenient location if you’re arriving late in Zamboanga City. It’s near the malls, but traveling to the city center might take more time.
Here’s a list of recommended accommodations in Zamboanga City by online users.

On my recent trip to Zamboanga city, we were billeted at Grand Astoria Hotel. It’s located in the city center, so it’s quite a good location. However, the surrounding areas aren’t really inviting to explore and aren’t pedestrian-friendly. The hotel looks a bit timeworn, with an outdated interior. My room is a bit old and yes, it smelled old. But it has enough space for me to move, as well as store my luggage. Shower has consistent water, and more importantly there’s bidet. Towels and drinking water were provided. But it’s lacking toiletries – no soap or body wash. I didn’t ask to have my room cleaned for the duration of my stay because my stuff is all over and there’s no hotel safe where I can leave my laptop and external hard drives. Breakfast is decent, but be early or else you might be left with nothing. Lol It was festival season during our stay, so, I expected more staff at the dining since they have a lot of guests, but there seems to be one person doing all the work that time. Checking-in took longer than it should because there’s a bunch of guests since it’s festival week. Still, hotel should’ve been prepared for it. Staff are helpful but aren’t as warm and welcoming like in some hotels I stayed at before. You can find better hotels in the city for the same price.

MID-RANGE HOTELS IN ZAMBOANGA CITY
I didn’t stay at Marcian Garden Hotel, but this is where the Mascota 2025 was held. I find the hotel staff to be warm and helpful. The hotel façade also looks clean and modern too.

HOW TO GET TO ZAMBOANGA CITY
BY AIR
Local airlines such as Cebu Pacific and Philippines Airlines have flights from Manila to Zamboanga City. Transit time is roughly 1.5 hours. Regular airfare usually ranges from ₱4,000 ($69) – ₱5,000 ($86) one-way.
Alternatively, you can also fly from Cebu to Zamboanga City. Travel time is roughly 1.15 hours. Regular airfare ranges from ₱3,000 ($52) to ₱4,000 ($69), one-way.
If you’re coming from Clark, Pampanga, Cebu Pacific has connecting flights to Zamboanga City. But the airfare is quite steep – ₱9,000 ($155) to ₱10,000 ($172), one-way.
BY BUS
Ceres Bus has trips to Zamboanga 4 times weekly from Cubao, Manila in their Kamuning Terminal. It leaves at 8:00 PM every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 PM. The trip runs through the Western Nautical Highway and you make 3 RoRo/ferry rides, that are included on the ticket price.
To get to the terminal of Ceres Bus in Kamuning, take the MRT to GMA-Kamuning Station. Walk to Ceres Bus Terminal for roughly 15 minutes. Use Google Maps.
Regular bus fare is ₱5,200 ($89), PWD/Seniors ₱4,593 ($79). Fare is inclusive of ferry rides. Yes, fare is a bit expensive, or almost the same as the regular flights via major local airlines, but many passengers still take this route especially if they’re carrying more luggage.
ZAMBOANGA AIRPORT TO ZAMBOANGA CITY CENTER
Zamboanga city and neighboring towns are served by Zamboanga International Airport. It is conveniently located within the city so getting to the city proper is not that hard. There are taxis waiting for passengers within the airport property. Flag down rate is roughly ₱40 ($0.69).
Alternatively, you can take a tricycle to the city center. Just exit the gate of the airport and there are tricycles waiting for passengers outside. Supposedly, the tricycle fare in Zamboanga is only ₱20 ($0.34) for the first kilometer, and ₱5 ($0.086) for every additional kilometer.
However, in my experience, tricycles usually charge tourists higher rates. For example, in the city, we’re always charged ₱50 ($0.69) per pax when traveling in groups, or ₱100 ($0.69) when I take the tricycle alone, which is quite disappointing. So if coming from the airport, expect to be charged ₱150 ($2.58) to ₱200 ($3.44) to your hotel in the city center.
GETTING AROUND IN ZAMBOANGA CITY

But if you want to do a DIY tour of Zamboanga City, it is also possible. I’ll try to write a detailed guide soon, however, getting around means you have to ride the tricycle, take a taxi, or book a van. For the tricycle tour, you have to haggle and talk to the driver, as they often charge tourists higher rate compared to locals, and since they speak Chavacano here, it’s hard to pretend that you’re a local.
